Manufacturing Processes

Prototyping

Prototyping is where sourcing decisions quietly get made. A prototype supplier who cannot scale forces a change later; one who understands your production intent will steer the design toward manufacturability from the start.

Choose a process that reflects production

A 3D-printed part validates fit and form. A machined or molded prototype validates function and process. If your goal is to prove a production design, prototype in the process you intend to use — or at least understand where the two will differ.

Plan the transition early

Ask prototype suppliers what happens at 100, 1,000 and 10,000 units. Some shops carry you the whole way; others hand you off. Both are fine as long as you know which one you are working with.
