Manufacturing Processes

Casting

Casting makes economic sense when geometry is complex and volume supports pattern or die cost. The process choice — sand, investment or die — follows from tolerance, surface finish, alloy and quantity.

Choosing a casting process

Sand casting suits larger parts and lower volumes with looser tolerances. Investment casting delivers finer detail and better finish at higher piece cost. Die casting suits high volumes in non-ferrous alloys with excellent repeatability.

Machining allowance

Almost every casting needs some machining. Decide early whether the foundry machines in-house or whether you will manage a second supplier — and who owns dimensional accountability at the finished-part level.
