Understanding shop types
A shop with laser, brake, welding, finishing and assembly under one roof reduces handoffs and usually shortens lead time. A specialist cutting house may beat that shop badly on a pure cut-to-print job. Match the shop type to the scope of your part, not to its marketing language.
- Cut-only shops: laser, plasma, waterjet profile cutting
- Form and weld shops: brake work and weldments
- Full-service fabricators: cut, form, weld, finish, assemble, ship
Getting a comparable quote
Send the same package to every shop: drawings or a solid model, material spec, finish, quantity, expected annual volume and delivery requirement. Quotes that differ by 3x usually mean the shops made different assumptions, not that one is dishonest.
